  • World Art Day is observed on April 15 of every year. It is an international celebration of the fine arts which was declared by the International Association of Art (IAA), a partner of UNESCO, in order to promote awareness of creative activity worldwide.
  • A proposal was put forward at the 17th General Assembly of the International Association of Art in Guadalajara to declare April 15 as World Art Day. The first celebration was held in 2012.
  • This proposal was sponsored by Bedri Baykam of Turkey and co-signed by Rosa Maria Burillo Velasco of Mexico, Anne Pourny of France, Liu Dawei of China, Christos Symeonides of Cyprus, Anders Liden of Sweden, Kan Irie of Japan, Pavel Kral of Slovakia, Dev Chooramun of Mauritius, and Hilde Rognskog of Norway. It was accepted unanimously by the General Assembly.
  • The date 15 April was chosen in honour of the great Italian painter, sculptor, writer, thinker, philosopher, mathematician and scientific innovator, Leonardo da Vinci’s birth anniversary.
  • World Art Day was officially held for the first time in the City of Los Angeles in 2015. In the year 2017,IAA USA, the official US-based chapter of the IAA, was formed.
  • According to UNESCO, World Art Day celebrations help strengthen the links between artistic creations and society, encourage awareness of the diversity of artistic expressions and highlight the contribution of artists to sustainable development. The day also focuses on arts education in schools.
  • In 2019, during the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference, World Art Day was officially proclaimed as a UNESCO observance, and the International Association of Art was made an NGO partner of UNESCO.
  • Art is a broad range of human activities in creating the visual, auditory or performing the artifacts, expressing their creative or technical skill, which intended to be appreciated for their beauty and emotional power.
  • Art comes in various forms, but the main categories, first founded in ancient Greece, were Painting, Architecture, Music, Sculpting, Dance, and Literature. In 1911 Cinema, was added as a seventh art by Ricciotto Canudo.
