National Safety Day

  • National Safety Day is celebrated on 4th March, every year, in India.
  • It’s a national celebration to develop and sustain the movement on SHE that is focusing on ‘Safety, Health and Environment’ at the national level.
  • Its objectives are to ensure that safety and health are integrated into the work culture and lifestyle, renew the commitment of the employees towards safety and health at the workplace, and achieve greater participation of the employees in OSH activities.
  • On 4th March 1966, the Ministry of Labour, Government of India set up the National Safety Council of India (NSC), which is an autonomous body.
  • It is an apex non-profit making, tripartite body that is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950.
  • Therefore, the foundation day of the National Safety Council was decided to observe as National Safety Day in 1972.
  • The National Safety Council eliminates preventable deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the road through leadership, research, education, and advocacy.
  • This day highlights the importance of reduction of the rate of industrial accidents and also focuses on the areas that have not yet been covered by any safety legislation.
  • This day is widely celebrated by industry, trade unions, govt. departments, regulatory agencies, NGOs, and institutions with the active support of the Central and State Governments and media.
  • The theme for National Safety Day 2021 is“Sadak Suraksha (Road Safety)”.
  • Activities focusing on the objectives of NSC are performed including conducting specialised training courses, conferences, seminars, and workshops, conducting consultancy studies like safety audits, hazard evaluation, and risk assessment, etc.
