Swachh Survekshan 2020 report was recently released by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry. Swachh Survekshan 2020 covered 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards and 92 Ganga towns. This survey was carried out in 28 days

What is Swachh Survekshan ?

Swachh Survekshan is a ranking exercise taken up by the Government of India to assess rural and urban areas for their levels of cleanliness and active implementation of Swachhata mission initiatives in a timely and innovative manner.

The objective of the survey is to encourage large scale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a better place to live in. Additionally, the survey also intends to foster a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities to improve their service delivery to citizens, towards creating cleaner cities and towns.

The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India takes up the Swachh Survekshan in urban areas and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in rural areas. The Quality Council of India (QCI) has been commissioned the responsibility of carrying out the assessment.

World’s largest sanitation survey

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri said Swachh Survekshan, in its fifth edition, had become the world’s largest sanitation survey, with 1.8 crore citizens giving their feedback.

The results were announced by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri at a ceremony. A book titled ‘Report on Assessment of 97 Ganga Towns’ was also released during the event. A total of 1.9 crore citizens across 4,242 cities of the country participated in the survey held by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Indore was ranked the cleanest city in the overall category this year followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai. Chhattisgarh is the cleanest state in the category of states with more than 100 urban local bodies.

Ahmedabad is India’s the cleanest Mega city. New Delhi is the cleanest capital city. Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur is the cleanest smallest city. Bengaluru wins the Best Self Sustainability award in the Mega city category. Jharkhand is the cleanest state in the category of state with less than 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). Cleanest Cantonment was awarded to  Jalandhar Cantt, Punjab.

In cities with population less than one lakh, Karad in Mahrashtra is cleanest city. Maximum citizen participation in keeping city areas clean – Shahjahanpur. Fastest-moving city in terms of cleanliness – Jodhpur (Rajasthan). Mysuru (Karnataka) is ranked cleanest among the medium-sized cities.

Bihar’s Patna has emerged as the most dirtiest city. Even in the category of smaller cities too the state has fared poorly with several of its cities like Gaya and Buxar making at the bottom of the rankings.

Indore Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pratibha Pal said on Wednesday, “We are confident that with the help of our hard working sanitary workers, aware citizens and public representatives of Indore.”

Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra said Swachh Survekshan, which began with a survey of 73 cities in 2016, had grown to cover 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards and 97 “Ganga towns” in 2020. Survey teams visited 58,000 residential and 20,000 commercial areas in 28 days, while 1.87 crore citizens’ feedbacks were received.
