  • World liver day is observed on every 19 April, to spread awareness about liver related disease.
  • The liver is the second largest and the most complex organ in the body, with the exception of the brain. It is a key player in your body’s digestive system. Everything you eat or drink, including medicine, passes through the liver. You cannot survive without liver. It is an organ which can be easily damaged if you don’t take good care of it.
  • Liver works hard, performing hundreds of complex functions, including:
    • Fighting infections and illness
    • Regulating blood sugar
    • Removing toxic substances from the body
    • Controlling cholesterol levels
    • Helping blood to clot (thicken)
    • Releasing bile (A liquid that breaks down fats and aids in digestion)
  • Liver disease doesn’t usually cause any obvious signs or symptoms until it is fairly advanced and the liver is damaged. At this stage, possible symptoms are loss of appetite, weight loss and jaundice.
  • This day educates the people about the liver part. This day defines the challenges, problems faced by the people and overcomes precautions. This day is associated with the World Health organization.
  • There has been a steady rise in the rate of liver diseases over the years. Globally, alcohol, NASH and viral hepatitis are the most common causative factors of liver diseases.
  • As per the World Health Organisation’s estimates published in 2017, liver disease deaths in India reached 259, 749 or 2.9% of total deaths. Liver disease may affect one in every 5 Indians.
  • Liver diseases can be caused by hepatitis A, B, C, alcohol and drugs. Viral Hepatitis occurs due to the consumption of contaminated food and water, unsafe sexual practices and drug abuse. As per World Health Organisation (WHO), liver diseases are 10th most common cause of death in India.
