On This day : – Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia known as “Dauntless Dr. Lohia”, freedom fighter, social reformer and socialist leader, died at New Delhi on 1967.

Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia was an activist in the Indian independence movement and a socialist political leader. the last phase of British rule in India, Lohia worked with the Congress Radio which was broadcasted secretly from various places in Bombay until 1942.

Early Life and political career

Mr. Ram Manohar was born on 23rd March in Akbarpur of British India and had a wonderful career, in early days of his childhood he was a scholar and was involved in the freedom struggle by being a part of the Indian congress party before the independence. He got grants from Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany.

After independence he became a prominent leader of the and left congress to become a member of Socialist party. He remained a member of the Socialist Party. Unhappy with the new party, Lohia led a split from it to reform the Socialist Party (Lohia) in 1956. Ram Manohar lohia was a part of 1962 against Nehru in 1962 general election in Phulpur where he lost.

In 1963 Lohia became a member of the Lok Sabha after a by-election in Farrukhabad (Lok Sabha constituency) and in 1965 merged the Socialist Party (Lohia) into the ranks of the Samyukta Socialist Party. The two socialist factions merged, split and re-merged several times. He won Lok Sabha general election of 1967 from Kannauj (Lok Sabha constituency), but died a few months later.

Death

On the unfortunate night of 12th October, 1967 Mr. Ram Manohar Lohia passed away. Once a firebrand of Congress Socialists who looked upon Jawaharlal Nehru as their leader, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia parted ways with the Congress and became one of the Nehru bitterest rivals.

On the occasion of his 53rd birth centenary, let us resolve to re-analyse Lohia’s intellectual contributions. Let us try to spread his re-examined messages of broad nationalism, democracy, socialism and the international order.
