INS Shalki (S46) is a Shishumar-class diesel-electric submarineof the Indian Navy. The submarine was the first ever submarine to be built in India. It was launched in 1987 by the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Shalki was commissioned on 7 February 1992 and is in active service with Indian Navy as of 2016.It is the third submarine in its fleet of Shishumar Class.It was made by Mazagon Dock Shipyard Limited.

Description of INS Shalki

The INS Shalki has the length of 64.4m,Beam length of 6.5m and Draught of 6 m.The submarine has the surface displacement of 1450 tons and 1850 tons when dived underwater.

The submarine is diesel powered and has a total of nine motors.The submarine has a speed of 11 knots (19km/h) on surface,22 knots (31 km/h) when submerged.

Armaments

INS Shalki has a crew capacity of 40 (including 8 Officers).It can submerge to the maximum test depth of 260 m (980 ft).

INS Shalki is equipped with 24 × external strap-on mines and 14x AEG-SUT Mod 1 wire-guided active/passive torpedoes.
