India is celebrating its 73rd Army Day today. Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year to honor the soldiers of the country, who have set the greatest example of selfless service and brotherhood and more than anything the love for the country.

On the occasion of the 73rd Indian Army Day, the Indian Arm will organise a marathon ‘Vijay Run’ to commemorate Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebrations of India’s resounding victory over Pakistan in 1971.

The nation also pays tribute to the valour of the bravehearts on this day and thanks them for their selfless service.

Why we celebrate Army Day on 15th January?

Why January 15? Every year, the Indian Army celebrates the Army Day on January 15. It is because, on this day in 1949, the Indian Army got its first chief. Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as the reins of the armed force as first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.

Every year, Indian Army Day is celebrated with different themes and ideas. Last year, the ‘Digital Transformation of Defense’ was the Indian Army Day 2020 Theme.

On the 72nd Indian Army Day 2020, Captain Tania Sher Gill became the first woman parade adjutant for the Army Day Parade.

Tania Sher Gill is a fourth-generation Indian army officer who joined the armed forces in 2017 after graduating from the Officers Training Academy in Chennai.

Interesting information about KM Cariappa

On this day in 1949, the Indian army got its first Indian chief in Lt Gen KM Carriappa who took over the command from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander-in-chief of India.

In addition to the first Army Chief, KM Cariappa became the first officer to be given the rank of Field Marshal. Field Marshal Kariappa commanded the Indian Army on the Western Command in the Indo-Pak war in 1947. The Indian Army was built in the year 1776 by the East India Company in Kolkata. Today, the Indian Army has 53 cantonments and nine army bases across the country. Indian Military Engineering Services is the largest manufacturing company in India.

  • Born in Kurg, Karnataka in 1899, Field Marshal Kariappa started a job in the British Indian Army at the age of just 20.
  • Cariappa led the army along the western border in the Indo-Pak war of 1947.
  • At the time of Indo-Pak independence, Mr. KM Cariappa entrusted with the responsibility of dividing the armies of the two countries.
  • In 1953, Cariappa retired from the army.
  • KM Cariappa was giving the title of Field Marshal. So far in Indian history, this title has been given to only two officials.
  • He led the Indian Army on the western border in the Indo-Pak war of 1947.
  • Sam Manekshaw is the country’s first Field Marshal. He was conferred with the post of Field Marshal by the President in January 1973. M Cariappa was the second Field Marshal in the country. He was made Field Marshal in 1986.

The bravery awards and Sena medals are also given on this day. This day is celebrated with military parades at various Army command headquarters. The parades showcase various aerial stunts and bike pyramids.
