Each year, National Youth Day is celebrated on January 12. The date was chosen to honour the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. It is also known as Swami Vivekananda Jayanti. He is considered as one of the greatest spiritual and social leaders of India. He had emphasized the need and role of youth in a nation’s development on numerous occasions.

Swami Vivekananda saw hope for the future in every child and believed that with “muscles of iron” and “nerves of steel”, they could bring about social change. Swami himself personified the eternal energy of the youth and a restless quest for truth. Today, almost 50 percent of India’s population is under the age of 25. The future of the country rides on their shoulders — making celebrations that empower young people so important.

National Youth Day history

Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata. He was not like the other monks. His achievements at the global stage put India’s name on the map. It helped in reviving India’s image as a land of spirituality. He was immensely focused on harnessing the potential of youth. He played a key role in inspiring the young generation against the British to attain independence.

Swami Vivekananda had immense knowledge about Philosophy, Religion, Literature, Vedas and Puranas, among others. In 1984, the Government of India declared January 12 as the National Youth Day to honour him and make people aware of the man and his teachings. Since then, the day is celebrated in India every year.

World Impact

What Swami Vivekananda achieved overseas played a major role in reviving India’s image as a land of spirituality.

The speech he delivered at the at the Parliament of World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893 which began with “Sisters and brothers of America” immortalized the ideals the monk believed in globally.

Swami Vivekananda always focused immensely on harnessing the potential of the youth. He wanted to inspire the young generation so that they could counter the British and attain Independence.

Swami Vivekananda’s weapons of winning the world were education and peace. He always portrayed himself as a ‘Nationalist Saint’ who wanted the youth to get out of their comfort zones and achieve absolutely anything they desire.
