  • India observes National Vaccination Day every year on 16th March. The
    day is also known as National Immunization Day.
  • The National Vaccination Day was first observed on March 16, 1995. On
    this day, the first dose of Oral Polio Vaccine was given in the year 1995. In
    fact, on 16 March 1995, the Government of India started the ‘Pulse Poli
    Abhiyan’ in the country. The government had targeted to eradicate polio
    from the country through this scheme. And ever since National Vaccination
    Day is celebrated on this day to mark the launch of the Pulse Polio Program.
  • Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing infectious diseases.
    With the help of vaccination, children are protected from dangerous diseases.
    Whenever a newborn is born, many types of vaccines are applied to it. So
    that he cannot get any fatal disease.
  • Vaccination is used for the eradication of diseases like polio, smallpox,
    measles, and tetanus from the world. Hence Vaccination is one of the safest
    and most effective methods of preventing childhood diseases.
  • The National Vaccination Day is observed in order to enhance the awareness
    and eradication of polio from the planet. Every year, on National
    Vaccination Day, millions of children are given the polio vaccine to prevent
    the risk of polio.
  • The National Immunization Day is one of the four strategies that are
    recommended by the WHO to eradicate polio completely. According to
    WHO, the NID has to be conducted twice a year at a gap of 2 to 4 weeks.
  • There are two types of vaccines that are being administered in the country. It
    includes IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine) and OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine).
  • On 27 March 2014, India was certified as a polio-free country along with 11
    other countries of the South-East Asia Region of the World Health
    Organisation (WHO). These countries were Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia,
    Maldives, Myanmar, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nepal, Sri
    Lanka, Timor-Leste, and Thailand. In India, the last case of polio patients
    was reported on 13 January 2011.
  • India as of today happens to have one of the largest vaccination programmes
    in the world when it comes to the quantities of vaccines used, the
    involvement of human resources, coverage of geographical areas, and also, the widespread of beneficiaries covered under these immunization programmes.
  • Among the most popular immunization programmes in India, one is the Pulse Polio Programme, and the other one is the Indradhanush programme launched in December 2014, with the sole mission of covering vaccination for all children in India, wherein pregnant women and children up to two years of age are given all important vaccinations free of cost, to ensure healthy early child development in the country.
